Jabuticaba

Botanical Name:  Myrciaria cauliflora
Habitat:  Native to Brazil

General:  Now widely cultivated throughout tropical and warm temperate regions, Jabuticaba is a tree where flowers grow directly from the trunk of the tree, which lead to the emergence of grape-like fruits.  The fruits are 3-4 cm and are a purple-black color.  The fruit must be consumed within 3 to 4 days of harvesting, so it is not usually available outside of where it is commercially grown.   The fruit is typically used in jams, ice creams, and other foods where its mildly sweet taste can be appreciated.
